Chapter Fourteen

Axel

When Dash finally comes sauntering through the door later that night, I can smell her all over him.

“You fucked her,” I growl out. It’s not a question. “Please tell me you were smart enough to not mark her?” I can hear the edge of pleading in my tone. He must catch it too because his eyes flash to mine, mouth downturned when he replies.

“No. I didn’t mark her.” He shakes his head like he wishes he could have.

“Thank God for small miracles,” I grunt as I turn back to continue making dinner.

“You’re making a big mistake Ax,” he grumbles as he takes his seat at the table. I don’t dignify him with a response. Someone here is making a mistake, but it certainly isn’t me.

I focus on turning the meat as my mind flashes back to our old pack. When April and her older sister Elaina joined our pack, I instantly connected with Elaina. Her beautiful red hair shone through even in her wolf form. She was gorgeous, and when Dash came to me stating he felt the bond with April, I thought I would be next. I can still distantly feel the hope I felt that day. The hope that was crushed, when she connected with Johnathan and April turned out to be a fraud. I think both of us gave up a little that day, but unlike me, Dash is a dreamer. Where I became jaded and cold, he kept that small ember of hope alive and continued to feed it over the years.

I shake my thoughts loose as I plate up our meal and place his in front of him at the table.

“Thanks,” he gripes as he cuts into his steak and shoves it into his mouth.

“Where were you all day?” I ask after around ten minutes of intense silence.

“Around…” he shrugs me off. I slam my fist down on the table, causing the dishes to clatter and our glasses to shake.

“You need to stay away from her, Dash.” I lower my voice before continuing, “You know how crushed you were when the whole April thing went ass up. I don’t want to see you go through all that again.” I’m being honest with him because there is nothing worse than a heartbroken pup.

“It’s not the same Ax. I feel it in my gut. Fuck, my very bones. I know you like to think of me as just a young pup, but I’m not. I’m a grown-ass man now, Ax.” He runs his fingers through his hair as he blows out a frustrated breath. I stare at him for a while, looking at his stubbled jaw and I guess he’s right. He’d grown up in the years we were alone, but I’ll always be his alpha and he needs to respect my rules, regardless of age.

“I get it, you’re not a pup anymore but trust me when I say, she’s not it. I know you wish she was. Shit, I think part of me wishes she was too.
